Here’s a funny thing about expectations: they’re built on a fantasy, not reality. Being disappointed about things is an exercise in futility.
βIt was one of those times you feel a sense of loss, even though you didn’t have something in the first place. I guess that’s what disappointment is- a sense of loss for something you never had.β
β Deb Caletti, The Nature of Jade
But just like any exercise, it sometimes needs to be done in order to get to a better place. Not expressing any feeling is generally a bad idea, as far as I’m concerned; the trick is to express it and move on, not stick around wallowing in it. Once I’ve acknowledged that the thing I’d looked forward to is not coming true, I can mourn for a short while, then look forward to the next greatest thing.
Time doesn’t stand still. It doesn’t serve me to stick for too long to any negative feeling if I can possibly help it. There’s always something new just waiting around the bend.
