First - happy belated birthday to [livejournal.com profile] midnightscott, [livejournal.com profile] blackradish, [livejournal.com profile] cxc, [livejournal.com profile] rhainangel, [livejournal.com profile] ding_0_, [livejournal.com profile] goofy_goff, [livejournal.com profile] glass_grenade, and [livejournal.com profile] radiantdaffodil! I'm really sorry I missed getting your wishes to you in time, but I haven't been around. I've been thinking about all of you, though.
And today! TODAY is [livejournal.com profile] xelucha's birthday! May it be filled with BPAL, great old psychedelic folk, and delicious tea!

So I've waited so long to give a real update that I'm starting to lose details. Most of the part of the trip that concerned B'more was either spent with my Mom or with the ever-delightful [livejournal.com profile] djdayglo. Mom replaced her screened porch in the back yard with a glassed-in screenhouse, and she and I spent a LOT of time sitting out there and enjoying it, often with Queenie at our feet. I managed to get some time with Wendy at a strangely depleted Daily Grind, and then with Wendy and [livejournal.com profile] scary_kisses for a fabulous dinner at One World [and [livejournal.com profile] rampantpuppy even showed up, a super surprise!] and MUCH talking. It was a seriously laid-back visit, which I probably really needed. Sunday I rolled out around half-time [so my Mom wouldn't have her game interrupted, hehee] and drove over to Shirlington to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] jukebox_heroine, [livejournal.com profile] oletheros, [livejournal.com profile] crossbonesdj, and [livejournal.com profile] jesusbunny at Aladdin's for fabulous Middle Eastern fare and delightful, silly conversation. [and CAKE. Delicious chocolate cake!] Even managed to make it into Charlottesville in time to catch the entirety of the Synthetic Division/In Tenebris/ The Last Dance show.

Can I just say that the show was SO good... I'm really glad I made it. I had a couple of moments there, standing up front and letting the extremely tight set from In Tenebris wash over me - yeah, it gets hard sometimes to leave the past behind. I do miss Cville, and I feel like I'm already a part of the past there... as well it should be, but still. It was tough.

IHop with fabulous peoples! [I managed to get it twice, after that show AND after Umlaut, how super is that?] Still not enough time to talk to [livejournal.com profile] redzshadow, there never is enough time. A lot of coffee, time to catch up with my favourite Squidgewife [livejournal.com profile] krasota... a delightful dinner with [livejournal.com profile] krues8dr, who I miss quite a bit... having [livejournal.com profile] solieri help me make my now-infamous costume in the meter parking lot by the Downtown Mall... endless coffee at Mudhaus.

UMLAUT! What fun! Despite that I had to convince someone that insulting the music that the DJ was currently spinning was NOT the way to get a request played, I had a BLAST and it was definitely the sendoff I could only have dreamed of having. The place was packed, the costumes were funny and/or amazing, people were pleasant and huggy and happy and silly, and the dance floor was packed. DJing with [livejournal.com profile] thatritebastard and [livejournal.com profile] audiorapture was as pleasant and fun as always - I'll miss trading sets with you. Being there definitely confirmed that I'm making the right decision - not only did I feel like retiring was the right thing to do, I had a serious reaction to the smoke about halfway through the night and it was baaaaad. However, I did have an excellent time while there, and all my thanks go out to [livejournal.com profile] wanderyng1, Umlaut and R2/Rapture for having me there... and to everyone for being there. Thank you.

The last IHop had the lovely [livejournal.com profile] carnaval_noir and [livejournal.com profile] nannar in the party - Brian was an AWESOME werewolf. I feel like I hardly got to talk to Kristy, but that wasn't her fault. [miss you, girlie!] I also didn't get nearly enough time talking to [livejournal.com profile] nothingoth and [livejournal.com profile] aleiphein. I did get more time with Maya, but I could have used more more more. More time with Patrick would have been cool, too.
HOWEVER. It was a great night. And the next day, lunch at Panera before shipping out was also SUPER. Thank you guys for making time for me.

The drive home was tiring. I came home and was just wiped out. In fact, I've been pooped for a week. Yet another signal that I'm getting too old for this. ._.

And speaking of getting too old for stuff - I need to sleep. I hope I didn't miss anything vital. I love all you guys. Look for an Umlaut setlist tomorrow. Now, sleep.

So I've been really pooped and haven't posted anything and haven't kept up with everyone. I apologise. I owe y'all a big update, and I've missed some things like birthday wishes and a few big changes. I'm off today to get dressed, go vote [and hope that my vote helps to get all the endless political ads off tv and out of my mailbox!] then after a grocery run I'll try and gather thoughts and post about all this stuff. Wert!

In the meantime, if you want to see the Halloween craziness from Umlaut, take a look over here: http://gallery.clubumlaut.org/main.php?g2_itemId=735

ps - if you have it in you, can just spare a kind thought for my mom today? She lost her beloved kitty Queenie this week and I'm afraid she's feeling pretty down about it. I'll post a bit about that later if I can - Queen was an amazing cat and I'm going to miss her terribly.

Weds Oct 25: Watch Lost. Muy importante. Snuggle with husband and cat. Hit the road after husband goes to bed.
Thurs Oct 26: Get into B'more in the morning. Find coffee and breakfast. Go to Mom's, pass out for a bit, have lunch with her. Try to meet a certain roller-skating monkey around 7p for an all-skate adventure. [must remember to pack knee brace]
Fri Oct 27: Spend time with Mom, meet up with anyone willing to do so for coffee and trekking around Fell's Point in the evening. Trot over to Ascension at some point to check out the DJ stylings of one [livejournal.com profile] shocktrama.
Sat Oct 28: Not sure yet, but I have to accompany my Mom for a bit to a party thing she wants me to go to in the evening. I should be out early enough to meet up with people for foods or hanging out or something.
Sun Oct 29: Leaving B'more in the afternoon. Who in DC would want to meet up with me for dinner? And where would be a good place that's easy to get to from 495 or 66? I'm thinking dinner around 6 or 7pm, because I need to be in C'ville by 10p at the latest to catch SYNTHETIC DIVISION, IN TENEBRIS and THE LAST DANCE at The Outback. Hell yeah.
Mon Oct 30: Open season on Xiane in C'ville. Call me, text me, post here when you're available to meet up.
Tues Oct 31: HALLOWEEN BABY. Daytime is open for meeting/hanging out. Come to UMLAUT that night to catch ME in my last big DJ experience for the foreseeable future, with DJ Right Bastard also layin' down the spooky tunes or whatever he feels like. Dress up! Find out all the info at [livejournal.com profile] cville_umlaut! Also I'm probably going to go to iHop after the fact, 'cause that's how I roll.
Weds Nov 1st: Wow, bet I'll feel like I was ran over by this point. Hang out, get brunch with available folks, leave town by 3pm at latest. Make it home hopefully in time to catch Lost, while snuggled with my much-missed husband and cat.

Any questions? Comments? Additions? Post 'em! :D

For those who are somehow living under a rock and haven't heard, I will be SPINNING AT [livejournal.com profile] cville_umlaut - That is, CLUB UMLAUT @ R2 IN CHARLOTTESVILLE VA - ON HALLOWEEN. It is my "retirement" gig. That means that if YOU can show up, I would be THRILLED!

This means that I want this night to be as awesome as I can make it, which means I am turning to YOU to ask - what do YOU want to hear ME spin on HALLOWEEN? [I like caps lock wheee!]

If it is SPOOKY and AWESOME and I have it or can manage to get it by Tuesday, I WILL SPIN IT. Make your requests in a reply to this. I'll start packing my DJ box tonight. I leave on Wednesday night for Baltimore [my first stop on the trip] so after that you're SOL.

I'll make a post separate to this with my rough travel-and-appearance schedule :)

In case you haven't caught on to what I've been hinting about over the past few months, my Halloween gig at [livejournal.com profile] cville_umlaut is marking the end of one era and the beginning of another.

I'd been a bit burned out on DJing at clubs for a while before I moved up to B'more - it was getting increasingly harder for me to get excited about what was going on with The Dawning, and I felt like it showed. Not that The Dawning and the people who make it up aren't awesome, but I wasn't happy with where it was being held, and I felt very hemmed in by the restrictions given to us by Outback Lodge. They have to protect their bottom line, but getting pre-empted by frat parties and not being able to book bands at will was really difficult for me, and I felt like it hurt attendance a lot, too. There were other factors, too - the wind was taken out of my sails when we lost the building bid for Transmission, definitely. And I was feeling sicker and sicker from the smoke I had to inhale every week, to the point that it was taking two to three days to recover from every Saturday.

Cryptkicker was a breath of fresh air for me - a venue where we could spin what we wanted, with no pressure... it was ratty and rough and a lot of fun. I don't think it was destined to last much longer than it did, despite how much I wanted it to continue. It has a special place in my heart, though. The Dawning fulfilled some huge dreams I'd had; Cryptie was another version of that dream.
After years of being a club DJ, though - the ride's over. I LOVE it, you have to know - I love the feeling of hitting the mix just right, of watching people light up as they hear the songs grab hold of them and drag them to the floor. I get high from hearing people cheer when I get the song they all wanted to hear, or when people come up to the booth to thank me for making them dance, or to ask me what that artist was... but I can't breathe afterward, guys. I feel like crap for days after. I can feel the toll that the club takes on me, and it tells me that it's time to retire from regular gigs and let younger people step up to bat.

So what does this mean? Unless you're booking for a smoke-free club, I can tell you with a sad face that I won't be DJing there. I'm pretty much done, it seems. I might do an occasional Dawning gig, because that's my heart home... but honestly, that's it. I can't even GO to clubs much anymore, it kills me to be there. Just catching someone's secondary smoke makes me feel sick these days.

So. If you want to hear me spin one last big hurrah... please come to Umlaut in Charlottesville on Halloween. If you have another non-smoking function where you'd like a DJ [like Witches' Brew], I'm your girl. Other than that... I love you all. Dance for me a couple of times, would you?

Expect some promised events with Radio Xiane that have sat on the back burner to come to pass. I need an outlet somehow.

We got a flyer under here! )

From the post that [livejournal.com profile] wanderyng1 made:

I want to give you all plenty of warning to clear your calendars. We've got our own local DJ Ritebastard joining the lovely DJ Xiane (MrsTigglebottom if you're nasty) on Halloween night for Umlaut. Come forthe costume party, stay for the dancing. There will indeed be a costume contest; I'll announce the intended prizes on the Umlaut website this Friday (http://clubumlaut.org).

If you need details, let me know - this should be a night to remember! And if you're going to be there, I'm taking requests NOW.
