Dear MySpace,

Thank you for using ads from a service that installs adware onto my computer without my permission. You already sucked before you seemingly joined forces with OIN [do a search on oinadserver if you want to see what I mean], which so happily added a program that randomly throws me popup ads. Little do YOU know that I've dealt with your kind before and I've eliminated OIN, but this is just bullshit.
Considering that I only use you for promotion, you are fairly useless anyway. I tried to send you an email, using the address YOU provided, and it freakin' bounced. Guess that means you don't want my input, therefore I won't be going to look at you too much anymore.

Not your friend, Tom. Not at all.

Really fricikin' annoyed at your lame ass,
Xiane

Has anyone else had this happen? I know it is from MySpace, because this is TWICE now.
I should really know better, but it really *is* a great tool for promotion... *sigh*

no wonder i hate myspace so much -- the site is so slow to respond and takes forever to load (on a cable modem) that i figured it must be up to no good. i am going to have to see if they've secretly installed any junk on my computer now.

Look in your program files folder for an icon of a red drum. If you see that, you've got it. There was something called "Cowabonga" and another .exe file I found, as well.

IE 6 - I probably *should* install Firefox too, but I have an unreasonable aversion to using it, mostly because of the unending hype some people have given it. ;)

Meh. Stupid MySpace.

Unfortunately, the site is chock-full of spyware and adware and by using the service you basically allow the programs to be installed... The fine print kind of crap... I am always running 3 seperate anti spyware/adware programs to clean my computer... I guess we just have to deal with it... =/

I'd never come across this until this week. I inherited a computer a while back that was rife with adware, so I learned how to get rid of it pretty effectively... this OIN thing is so bad that both AdAware and Sbybot S+D don't see it. SO annoying. I'm really considering just putting a message up in my MySpace that says to email me directly with concerns, because I'm beginning to think that it just isn't worth it, y'know?

Really sucks, though, because MySpace was awesome for getting the word out really quickly about events. And so many bands use it. :/

Here's a fun fact: After I started using AdBlock (Firefox extension) on MySpace, even after I've turned it off, I still get "this user's profile is undergoing maintenance" or similar bogus "errors" that prevent me from sending messages or using buttons to add people to my friend list.

I open Internet Explorer, and lo and behold! everything works fine again. MySpace is fucking over users who don't accept the rampant cruftware that propagates itself across the site.

Of course, we must always bear in mind that MySpace is a service that is provided to us for free. We have no real right to complain.

In principle, you're technically correct, but it's still extremely bad etiquette. Advertise to me all you want. Especially those google ads that are actually relevant to the content of the page. But respecting your user's privacy by not invading their computers is a fabulous way to keep users happy. Personally, I blame Rupert Murdoch and his intent to squeeze as many dollars out of MySpace as possible.

i haven't had this happen
(at least not to my knowledge(),
but i certainly agree that MySpace does suck pretty hard these days.
i'd delete my account if it wasn't one of the only ways to stay in touch with some of my friends.

Make sure to run something like AdAware regularly, if you don't already. I'd never seen this happen from them either, until last week. It has happened *twice* now, so I KNOW it is coming from them. Buttheads. :P
I keep saying I'm going to stop using it, too. Stupid me.

i actually do run AdAware on a weekly basis, so i'm covered on that front.
but MySpace seems to be the new breeding ground for douchebags.
i'm sure i'll delete my profile eventually.
...
y'know...like when i'm 80.

Yeah, it's too bad there's no douchebag filter.

ew. i can't believe athat's legal... IS it?

When you agree to their TOS, it generally gives them free reign to do stuff like that. Of course, when you agree, you aren't expecting them to load adware into your computer. It is a huge breach of ettiquette, but I don't think it is illegal, even though it should be.

so peopl ewho haven't actually signed up for myspace won't get it just by going on the site?

I'm honestly not sure, after thinking about it. I *think* I got it both times I was looking at someone's "blog" there, but I don't know if you have to be logged in to do that. You very well could have a point.

If MySpace would actually give an email address that didn't bounce... *pokes around some more*
