So after watching people battle it out over music all week, I've decided to enact a New and Official Labeling System for all music. You may henceforth stop using tired labels such as
"goth"
"hipster"
"post-punk"
"klezmer"
and implement my simple system for sorting all bands and tunes.

The labels?

Music That I Think Sucks
and
Music That I Think Rocks.

See how simple that is? Stops all arguing, gives all responsibility to me for determining what you should and should not be listening to at any given time.

I see a problem, I solve a problem. You may all thank me by purchasing large amounts of Music That I Think Rocks.

*curtsey*

edit - forgot to mention that you can thank [livejournal.com profile] 155metrocard for getting ol' Morrissey stuck in my head all day. ;)

what the hell is hipster?? and klemzer??

and i'm with you. besides, i'm horrible at labeling music right. :P so i jsut say "if i like it, i like it, who the hell cares what genre or label it carries?" :)

Klezmer is very different! Here's a good overview: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klezmer

Hipster's one way of labeling "indy-rock" or what "alternative college" music grew into.

I like your attitude about music. :)

I thought you might enjoy this. Hey, this takes all the pressure off music - NOW what are we all going to argue about?

Crap. ;)

Does this mean that Gary Numan is no longer a genre (coldwave)?

by [identity profile] xiane.livejournal.com
Gary Numan is definitely Music That I Think Rocks. He can have his own tier in that heading:

Music That I Think Rocks
- Gary Numan
- [everything else]

Anything that regularly rocks an accordion is a-okay by me!

Too bad that more people don't know about the crazy, fascinating music choices out there. I should have known you would, you rock like that.

I pretty much have "music."

That's my categorisation system. "Music" and "spoken" and "nature stuff that's neither but purports to be whales."

like that.

by [identity profile] xiane.livejournal.com
Whales rock! They make some crazy jams.

People are going to be surprised when they find that the Music That I Think Sucks category is mighty small.

This post has made me so much happier. I hate to see all my friends made unhappy because they feel that they have to defend the music they love. I'd rather make 'em laugh at me. ;)

Obviously anyone who fights over it hasn't gotten the memo that my opinion overrules all.

I'll straighten them all out eventually.

ps - kudos for the excellent posts in [livejournal.com profile] gothmusicshare. You've been really stretching peoples' outlook in music, or at least giving them the opportunity to do so.

The standard music labelling system is stupid. I worked for Sam Goody for a few hott months, and it was by far one of the dumbest systems I've ever seen. Also, I hate how the media labels things like "goth" and "hipster" and whatnot.

Like, how does VH1 get away calling Jack White a "goth rocker" simply because he's freakishly pale? BECAUSE THEY ARE STOOOOOPIIIIIIIID!!!

2006-08-18 13:55 (UTC)
by [identity profile] xiane.livejournal.com
Without the standard music labelling system, millions of music nerds will be left with nothing to argue in a self-aggrandizing way about. Movies like High Fidelity lose their comedic punch! Economies collapse! World War III!

...wait. :D

Jack White a goth rocker? Heh!

I kinda like White Stripes, tho.

That's great. I like that system.

Speaking of labels, my mom, dad and I were checked out by Nate at WholeFoods today and afterward, she was saying how nice he was and how the "goth" label steriotype by outsiders is so inaccurate. And I was like, "Uh, duh," but in a nice way.

In the course of the conversation, she also surmised that goths are like hippies and I agreed that goths are the hippies of the 20th cent. ;oP

2006-08-18 13:51 (UTC)
by [identity profile] xiane.livejournal.com
Old school hip-hop or new?

I suspect that if someone was bold enough to combine those sounds, it would *have* to rock. [Ian Curtis style vox with accordion and scratching and beatbox!]

What the bloody hell is "klezmer"? Oh well.

Whee for labels. I was going through my old emails from like 2003 and there was actually an lj post link from back when this girl told me I'm not goth and gave me a link to a website about "real goths". ...I was like oooookay.
