One month I *am* gonna make it to Cryptkicker! Just got back from NOLA and I'm tapped in just about every way imaginable, heh. Sooooon, soooooooooooon. I'm sure it'll kick every ass there at least 2x :>
Heee. I knew you wouldn't make it this time, silly. NOLA's a lot to recover from!
Is okay. We'll get you here. And mebbe - JUST mebbe... I'll get over there to hang out one day.
Hey, while I have your attention and I have a brain - what would you recommend as cool places in NOLA that a fun-loving Mom might want to go? She's going there in Nov and I've given her some advice, but more suggestions are always helpful. Especially food and neat stuff to see. I think she's going to be a lone, so she probably won't do so much bar-hopping stuff. :)
Yup, yup, it'll happen, and I am definitely lookin' forward to it :)
As for your Mom, hrmm. I would avoid the Jax Brewery tourist trap pavilion, instead hit moonwalk and Riverwalk for river scenery. Tons and tons of innocuous Mom-friendly shops within two blocks of Jackson Square. A peek in the St. Louis cathedral is always nifty. For food I'd generally avoid any place with a line cuz it usually means expensive and overrated. I'm a blue-collar local, so I tend towards haunts like Maspero's and Coop's (tho Coops might tweak her nerves unless she *really* likes divey-lookin' and less than spotless establishments. I just had their gumbo, alligator bits, calamari, and jambalaya supreme (with rabbit, smoked sausage, chicken, tasso, shrimp, and crawfish) while I was there, and dayum their food is every bit as good as I remember. I've heard they do a *killer* fettucine alfredo, too. For music, there's always House of Blues for a more corporate NOLA experience, but not to say that's bad in this case, just maybe pricier than it needs to be. For jazz, there's tons of places, most of which are out of my experience, but I hear Fritz's (on Bourbon, I think) consistently has good talent there. For first-timers, some of the guided tours make sense, but the thought of those poor horses and mules in the heat pounding pavement leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth. Her mileage may vary. Um, Riverboats! I haven't been on the Natchez since I was a kid, but if she's never been on a paddlewheeler, it might rock. The Aquarium of the Americas is surprisingly great. Streetcar ride through the Garden District area and Uptown is always good for just seeing the magnificent houses along oak-lined St. Charles. Maybe a walking tour of a cemetery. I think it's St. Louis #3 that has Marie Laveau's tomb. If she's renting a car while she's there, she might *really* enjoy the driving tour of Lakelawn cemetery as that's the one with the grand tombs shaped like small Greek temples, miniature cathedrals, ponderous blocks of monumental stone with tons of Greek and Egyptian stylings, etc. There's even a pyramid with a sphinx and a huge sword in an anvil.
yay!!

Hope that helps a wee bit :)
