More on the Show
12 June 2002 00:44Okay, I've finally got the time for the play-by-play for the Peter Murphy Day Of Excitement. Woo!
0900: Meet with Tiny DJ [Jessica from NRN, does New Rock Now and is the Music Director. She's the best], swoop upon WNRN studios and get a decent microphone for interviewing purposes, jump on RT 29 on the way to DC. I test the mini-disc recorder, sound like a total goober. Excellent.
1150 [approx]: We finally get to the 9:30 Club after a few stops and a tiny bit of turnaround. Stop off in the offices and meet with Amy, who works for the 9:30 and is super nice and evidently goth-friendly as well. She gives us 4 tour posters for the show [Peter as photographed by Anton Corbjin; very nice] as well as several posters for the upcoming KMFDM/Pig/16 Volt/Kidneythieves extravaganza. She advises us to go back to the club and speak to Jerome, the tour manager, before heading over to the hotel for our interview. Good thing, because...
1225: We meet with Jerome, and he insists that we're not slated for a face to face interview - "He's not doing ANY in person interviews this tour, only phone interviews" - uh oh. Jessica, pushy little wonderful thing that she is, insists that the chick from Metropolis is supposed to have this all ironed out, and that she'd already had this arguement with them and won. He has us wait while he works things out.
1240: Waiting.
1300: Jerome comes back and gives us our instructions. He's managed to get us a slot interviewing at Peter's hotel, in the bar. We have to leave NOW. We are short on time for this, he instructs. We give one of the road crew, Ada, a ride over with us. She's great, very chatty and sweet.
1315: We set up at the swankest little bar [at the Hotel Rouge, it is SMOOTH.]... a very Moroccan feel, with low tables, red velvet upholstered, high-backed couches, and black walls. Classy. Peter arrives promptly, dressed very casually in a blue sweater that matches his eyes nicely, and well-word corderoy pants. He looks a bit rumpled, like he'd just woken.. and he had. We get drinks, and he IMMEDIATELY grabs Jessica, then me, insisting on taking pictures for his online tour album. He's terribly friendly, easygoing and disarming in manner... he was not just willing to be close to us, he went out of his way to do so. We feel completely at ease! We reciprocate with pictures for the WNRN site. We begin the interview.
1345: We wrap things up, finally... we ended up with 45 minutes of leisurely conversation, instead of a rushed, nervous 15 minutes that we'd been promised. What a gift! [I can't tell you what was said; you'll have to wait for the interview to be aired. What I can tell you: we got detailed, interesting answers to our questions, and a story that I've not seen published anywhere else. He was quite eloquent!] After we turn off the mic, Jessica gets him on the subject of The Osbournes, which is a completely amusing exchange. She gives him home-baked cookies, he signs all our posters and CDs we brought, and he gives us a totally warm farewell. We take a while to pick up our tech crap, because we're buzzing with the afterglow!
1400: We float out of the building and decide the only way to end a moment like that is to go indulge ourselves. We go to Georgetown and go shopping [I buy socks with pink skull-n-crossbones on 'em; she buys shoes and lots of other things. I also buy an electronic mosquito repeller, for yard work. We shall see how THAT works.]... we eat at a really nice Vietnamese restaurant, get coffee, tool around. We managed to randomly kill time until the show...
2100[ish]: We arrive back at the 9:30, and catch most of Michael Sheehy's show. He's okay, not my thing - a man and his acoustic guitar, doing bluesy-type stuff. Eh.
2200[ish]: He takes the stage, and I witness the most amaing show! Middle Eastern meets smooth rock; reworks of some classic material, as well as astonishing covers of songs I'm not going to publish, as per the wishes of Mr Murphy, who I suspect wants to keep it a gift to those who've not yet seen the tour... four encores! Four! I am pleased to see that the audience stays totally captivated throughout the performance. They are willing to be wooed, and he takes his job seriously. All the classic moves are there, but the music lends a grace that suits him well, I think.
0015: We stumble out, dazed and amazed. We talk about the show for most of the way home.
Wow.
I'll try and get the pics that Jessica took linked soon. Not that you care as much as I do, hehehe.
btw - thanks to all for the sweet and loving comments on the last entry! Can you tell that I'm totally just in heaven in that pic, or what? *huge cheeze grin* Okay, I'll shut up now, I promise! Oh.. and notice the short hair? I finally got a frickin' short hair pic up. Yay!
*bounce*
I'm still amazed.
