Yes ~ I am well experienced w/ that particular olfactoral hazard. You & I reside in the same extended neighborhood - Locust Ave. & environs - I have moved twice now within it, and have discovered a well-connected community of skunks that also call this area home. When I lived on Martin St. , there was a gang of 3 of them that regularly patrolled my yards at dusk ; I would sit out and watch them ambling about in the fading light as they made their conical depressions in the soil in search of grubs. Why , they would even go so far as to pass under the lawn chair that I was sitting in ! & yet they never "emitted" at me................if you treat them w/ disinterest , they will return the favor. Of course , being Mustelids w/ over-developed musk glands , they feel compelled to fire off every once in a while (what is the use of having it if you don't use it ?? ) ; but , I have found it to be more of an inter-rivalry thing or truly a self defense maneuver , rather than meaness..........................Of course , as wine tasting study after study has proven , women have a much keener sense of smell than men do.............so your discomfort at the smell will be more acute.
I don't know if this will make it better, but have you ever watched one closely ? ? They really are very "goth" in appearance ; reminding me of black & white mobile fright wigs on four stubby legs.
