Some ideas for different charities that might need your assistance:

Here's a whole page of more underground charities of all sorts of persuasions. "Grassroots/Low-Income/People Of Color- led Katrina Relief". Out of those, I've heard that Food Not Bombs has been really rallying to get food to people. There's also a lot of evacuation-oriented charities listed, too.

Another HUGE page of charities is available at Network For Good.
Listed there, America Responds With Love has a very immediate list of things that you can CHOOSE for them to donate with your contribution - everything from diapers to phone cards. Nice if you want to specify the sort of donation you're giving.
Another neat one is Kids Aquiring Real Life Education. They'll be making sure that the kids will be getting the things they need, including right now food and water, then school uniforms and supplies.
In that vein, Love Our Children USA is concentrating on relief for children, 0-18 years old. After seeing all those sick and scared babies, this one seems pretty compelling.

One last place, for the animal lovers out there - Noah's Wish is specifically there to assist keeping animals alive during disasters. They rescue, find homes, and even return animals when possible after evacuations are over. They even provide grief counselors for those who have lost their pets.

If you go to CNN.com, there's a list of more well-known charities out there. The ones I highlighted seem the least tied up in religion or personal politics, although if someone's helping, their motivation is lower on my list of priorities. I just wanted to show the gamut of types of help one can give.

PLEASE give something to ONE of these charities! As previously stated, [livejournal.com profile] cryptkicker_md will be focusing on Second Harvest this month and Habitat For Humanity next month. Any amount helps.

In addition to the red cross, I gave a little money to Noah's Wish. They do a wonderful job rescuing and returning whenever possible. I hope in 2006 I will be able to attend a training session with them to be able to do animal rescue too.

FWIW, as i know more than a few cville (and local area) folks will be looking at this- an event is already in the works. it looks like it's going to be spread out across all the cville venues (outback/star hill/satellite/etc) and all types of music. we've already been asked to play, i should know more in the next couple of days.

They are wonderful, aren't they? I'm glad someone's looking out for the animals, too.

Noah's wish is a great organization. I just read a heart breaking article about how people having to evacuate are leaving their animals and all that tragedy about people losing their animals. It is just heart breaking.

I'm going to include these in the list I'm compiling for my paper -- I've been trying to find more smaller charities to list (and to donate to myself). Thanks!

Rock. Anything I can do to help, I'm good for. Let me know as soon as you've got details and I'll spread those around, too.

thanks!

I suspected all along, but now it's confirmed--you're one of the great ones!!
Thanks for posting this, and for re-posting my message...anything we can do, even if it's just a little bit, will mean the world to those in need. YOU ROCK!

Thank you!! I was trying to figure out who to donate to and just couldn't pick one, but your America Responds to Love did it for me. :-)

It's so hard to choose!

I convinced my Mom to donate $100 in our names to Second Harvest; I suspect that some of my paycheck will be going to each of the charities I found. I'm so glad I was able to help you choose! That makes my day :)
